autumn is here!

Queen Letizia turns 52 and starts autumn with the most anticipated opera event. The Teatro Real in Madrid celebrated the solemn opening of the season under the presidency of the King and Queen. Felipe VI and Letizia attended the first performance in the capital of the opera Adriana Lecouvreur, by Francesco Cilea, on a mild, still late summer night. The coliseum paid tribute to Josep Carreras on the 50th anniversary of his performance in this piece with Montserrat Caballé. It took place this Monday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m.

For this event, Letizia always puts a lot of effort into her outfits. These are the outfits that give us clues as to what we will see this season at the big events that await us. Above all, in Oviedo, on the night of the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony. On this occasion, neither a minimal look nor a Hollywood inspiration. We saw a dress with a fitted silhouette at the waist and a V-neckline with a high-gloss satin finish. Before posing, the King and Queen exchanged a few words in front of the cameras.

The media entered through the even-numbered door on the corner of Calle Carlos III. From there we saw the King and Queen arrive. The Plaza de Isabel II was lit up with premiere spotlights, a red carpet and celebrities parading. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, wearing a passionate red new-look dress, was busy talking to Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida in the lobby.

His wife, Teresa Urquijo, entered the theatre alone. She was wearing a Massimo Dutti from three seasons ago. The entrance to the Madrid theatre was packed, and for a moment it looked like the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Locals and tourists, with mobile phones in hand, recorded every movement, every gesture, every detail. The Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, was also present.

Together since summer

This month began for Queen Letizia in Paris, at the Paralympic Games. A travelling start for the King as well, with trips to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and to Zaragoza (this same Monday morning, 23rd, where he presided over the opening of the university). Meanwhile, the Queen visited Cantabria and Guadalajara, with a rentrée on her agenda that every September is marked by the start of her school year. This event at the Teatro Real is, therefore, the first event in which we have seen the King and Queen together since the summer.

A tribute from theatre to theatre

Adriana Lecouvreur is staged by David McVicar. A tribute to the world of theatre, sung and scored from within the theatre: behind the scenes, the stage machinery, behind the curtain and inside the dressing rooms. The set design is by Charles Edwards; and the carefully crafted eighteenth-century costumes are by Brigitte Reiffenstuel. A tribute to the stage, with an actress as its protagonist who feels trapped between the lights of glory and the shadows of her tragic personal destiny. The title role is played alternately by Ermonela Jaho and Maria Agresta. The artistic cast of the first cast is completed by Elina Garanca (Princess of Bouillon), Brian Jagde (Maurizio) and Nicola Alaimo (Michonnet). They are accompanied by the Royal Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of Nicola Luisotti. Ten performances will be offered until 4 October.
