Polish player Olek Balcerowski strengthens Unicaja for the next two seasons

Polish center Olek Balcerowski has reached an agreement with Unicaja Malaga for the next two seasons, with the option of extending his contract for a third year, pending a medical examination, according to a statement issued on Monday.

“Unicaja has reached an agreement for the signing of Aleksander ‘Olek’ Balcerowski (2.16 metres, 23 years old), pending his medical for the next two seasons, with the option for a third,” the Andalusian club reported on its website.

The young Polish center, who stood out at Gran Canaria, the team where he was trained and made his debut in the Endesa League in the 2017-2018 season, arrives in Malaga from Panathinaikos, current champion of the Euroleague and the Greek league. The inside player counts as a quota having been trained in the Canary Islands youth academy. In the 2021-22 season he was loaned to BC Mega Basket of Belgrade (Serbia), where he remained until March 2022, at which time he returned to Gran Canaria.

But it was in the 2022-23 season, in Las Palmas, when he managed to stand out in the Endesa League with averages of 9.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and one block for a PIR of 10 in 16:30 minutes on average. That same campaign he was crowned Eurocup Champion, a competition in which he scored 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds for a PIR of 8.8.

Last season, he averaged 6.15 points and 3.84 rebounds in 14:16 minutes in 26 games in the Greek league for Panathinaikos, while in the Euroleague he averaged 2.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 7:36 minutes in 24 games. The player is also a full international with the Polish national team, with which he played in the 2019 World Cup, the 2022 Eurobasket and this summer’s pre-Olympic tournament.

“The player will arrive in Malaga tomorrow, next Wednesday, to undergo a medical examination on Thursday and, if everything goes as normal, he will join the team’s training sessions on Friday,” the statement concluded.
