A statue of Sancho Gracia, actor of ‘Curro Jiménez’ and grandfather of Daniel Sancho, is vandalized and the city council removes it

These are difficult and painful hours for the Sancho family, who have received the worst news from Thailand: life imprisonment for Daniel after being found guilty of three crimes: premeditated murder, dismemberment and concealment of a corpse. It is the worst scenario (except for the death penalty) for the Spaniard, who will be transferred in the next few days to a maximum security prison. From Spain, the reactions to the sentence have not been long in coming and from Mondariz, the native land of Daniel, Sancho Graciathe most painful of all has arrived: his sculpture has been vandalized.

It was in 2014 when the Galician municipality wanted to pay tribute to one of its most beloved neighbors. His wife, Noelahis son Rodolfo and also his grandson, DanielThey then moved to Mondariz to inaugurate the sculpture of Sancho Gracia, which commemorated its most illustrious figure, Curro Jiménez: “It was a tribute to his personality and his Galician roots”said the mayor who commissioned it, now retired, José Antonio Lorenzo.

Early this morning, the bust and the horse, made of bronze by the sculptor José Molares, were vandalised by individuals who have not yet been identified and the council has decided to remove it to avoid further damage: “For now, we do not plan to put it back.”they have said to ABC.

Another blow for the Sancho family, who are devastated by the Thai court’s ruling. Many users have condemned this latest gesture by the residents of Mondariz: “What does the grandfather have to do with the grandson? A little less nonsense, please”, “What is the grandfather’s fault for the actions of an adult grandson?”, “He is not even the father, he is the sculpture of his grandfather… What madness”, “Criminal responsibility is neither inherited nor transmitted. What is the grandfather’s fault for the atrocity committed by his convicted grandson?”, “As a Galician that I am, this measure by the Mondariz council is shameful. What is the grandfather’s fault for what his grandson did?”, they repeat.
