Rafa Nadal withdraws from the US Open and will return at the Laver Cup

MADRID, 7 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal announced on Wednesday that he will not compete in the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, and that his next tournament will be the Laver Cup, from September 20 to 28.

“Hello everyone, I’m writing to inform you that I’ve decided not to compete this year at the US Open, a place where I have great memories,” wrote the Balearic player on his account on the social network ‘X’.

Nadal finished his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games a few days ago, where he did not compete for medals in either doubles or singles. His next step will not be the North American hard-court tour, but the Laver Cup, which Europe will play against the Rest of the World at the Uber Arena in Berlin.

“I will miss those electric and special nights at the Ashes in New York, but I don’t think I could have given 100% this time. Thank you to all my fans in the United States. I will miss you all and hope to see you again,” added the four-time US Open champion.

Nadal left his future after Paris 2024 up in the air, facing a final stretch of the season that he had set as a possible professional farewell. “When I’m clear about what my next stage is, I’ll let you know,” he said, acknowledging that reaching the Games was a first objective, without the results or the level he would have wanted.
