Frenkie de Jong has a sprained right ankle

BARCELONA, 4 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The FC Barcelona player Frenkie de Jong has a sprain in the external lateral ligament that will make him out of the next matches of Xavi Hernández’s team, after being injured on Sunday in the first half of the match against Athletic Club in San Mamés, in matchday 27 of LaLiga EA Sports.

“The tests carried out have confirmed that the first team player Frenkie de Jong suffers a sprain in the external lateral ligament of his right ankle. He is out and his evolution will determine his availability,” the Blaugrana club announced in a statement.

The midfielder was barely able to play the first 26 minutes of the match at ‘La Catedral’ in Bilbao, which ended 0-0. The Dutchman sprained his ankle when he jumped to contest an aerial ball in what was the Dutch international’s 27th game this season, with him starting in each of them.

With this injury he is, at the very least, a serious doubt for the ‘Champions’ match against Naples, corresponding to the second leg of the round of 16, which will be played on March 12 in Montjuïc.

So far, this season, Frenkie de Jong has only scored two goals and has not provided any goal assists in those 27 games. Last year he only scored those same 2 goals and distributed 4 assists.
