MADRID, 19 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The young promises of winter sports are now ready to compete in the IV edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games, whose celebration began this Friday in the South Korean town of Gangwon thanks to the lighting of the cauldron, with a flame that will remain lit until next February 1st.
The opening ceremony, which took place simultaneously at Gangneung Oval and PyeongChang Dome, was led by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and had the theme 'The Universe'. The cosmos symbolizes the endless possibilities for young people, from the imaginative playground of an ice planet to the gravity-defying freedom of outer space.
“This striking ceremony, full of musical performances that have shown the world part of Korean culture, welcomed the delegations of the National Olympic Committees with a flag parade, in which the Spanish delegation, made up of 29 athletes, has been led by Clara Aznar and Rodrigo Azabal as standard bearers,” reported the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE).
In these Winter Youth Olympic Games there will be around 1,900 athletes from 79 countries, between 14 and 18 years old, with full parity of participation between men and women. “This event is a springboard for young athletes who dream of achieving Olympic glory, giving them the opportunity to enjoy an experience similar to the Olympic Games,” the COE concluded in its press release.
