MADRID, 9 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
‘Women In Bike’, the project of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) and the regional federations, celebrates five years promoting the practice of female leisure and sports cycling among women in Spain with a balance of 19,000 meetings and close to 100,000 registrations.
The program, which has had the collaboration of Movistar and the support of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) since its inception, closed the year of its birth, 2018, with 400 meetings held, and is now about to reach the round figure of 20,000 stays.
Likewise, the work of volunteers, leaders who accompany, guide and inspire other women, introducing them to the sport of cycling, has become capital for the promotion of cycling.
In addition, ‘Women In Bike’ has held a multitude of events throughout Spain, from meetups in small municipalities to massive outings in large cities. Likewise, the movement has led many bicycle fans to face the challenge of participating in some of the most important cycle tour marches (Quebrantahuesos, Mussara, L’Étape) or experiencing events such as the ‘Women In Bike March’, held in the framework for the end of La Vuelta in both 2022 and 2023.
The president of the RFEC, José Luis López Cerrón, highlighted the success of the project. “We have seen how all that very important social mass of women who went out on bikes throughout Spain has inspired many more women to discover our sport. We are very proud of ‘Women In Bike’,” he indicated.
For her part, the president of the RFEC Women’s Commission and general coordinator of ‘Women In Bike’, Gema Pascual, was also enthusiastic about the success of the initiative. “It is very nice to see how little by little ‘Women In Bike’ has been taking steps to become the reference it is today. We owe this growth to the selfless work of all those women who during this time have acted as leaders holding meetings and motivating women of all ages to join in and enjoy our sport,” he said.
