Silvia Domínguez: “Surely it was my last Eurobasket”

MADRID, 25 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The captain of the Spanish basketball team, Silvia Domínguez, acknowledged the “task” of losing the Eurobasket 2023 final, which “surely” was her last European Championship with Spain, while she valued the importance of “returning” to between the best and the quality of new generations that will play more finals.

“You’ll see, it’s not just my decision. It was surely my last Eurobasket, I’ve really enjoyed the road. It’s a shame not to end up with gold, but I’m very happy to have accompanied this group to come back, which is not as easy as it seems,” he said at a press conference after the bitter final at the Stozice Arena in Ljubljana.

Spain dominated for 36 minutes but the shots did not go in at the most critical moment, in a silver that does mean a return to the podium. “It was a final, a tough game. I think we controlled the game for 35 minutes, it’s a chore for us. We will give the value that this medal deserves over time,” he said.

“We come from not playing in the World Cup last year, from losing in the last Eurobasket in the quarterfinals and also in Tokyo 2020, so I think that with the new generations we are back in a final. We always want to win but it has been special for this group, for the future. Spain will return,” he added.

On the other hand, Domínguez had words for the youngsters of the team. “They are going to play more finals, I am sure. Some have experienced what the summer of 2021 was like, the way in which Spain returns this 2023 and I am sure that they will have more Eurobasket, perhaps some Games. Everything will help them for the future. They are tears because it hurts and you want to win, but they are prepared to continue competing,” he said.
