ASOBAL requests protection from the CSD for the “ratification” of the highest men’s category as a professional league

MADRID, 16 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Association of Spanish Handball Clubs (ASOBAL) has requested this Friday “protection” from the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to put an end to “insecurity” in the Liga Plenitude ASOBAL, which “goes through the ratification” of its status as professional league, according to a statement.

“The Association of Spanish Handball Clubs (ASOBAL) requests protection from the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to unravel the current situation of insecurity that the highest category of Spanish men’s handball is going through and that goes through the ratification of its status as an agreed Professional League on July 7, 2022 by the CSD Board of Directors,” said the note.

ASOBAL criticized the “lack of an express resolution in the administrative sphere” on last summer’s agreement, since if it is not ratified before June 30, “it will make it impossible for the new television contract of the Liga Plenitude ASOBAL 2023/ to come into force 2024”.

“And it will have a negative impact on ASOBAL’s relationship with its main sponsor, in addition to freezing the collective agreement agreed with the Handball Players Association (AJBM), and the rest of the assets of the domestic competition, endangering the dispute of the next season”, warned ASOBAL, after José Manuel Franco stepped down as president of the CSD and Víctor Francos took office this Friday.

The CSD Board of Directors approved on July 7, 2022 the professionalization of the ASOBAL Handball League, through the qualification of its competitions as official of a professional nature and state level, although it has not yet been ratified.

This decision made ASOBAL the first professional handball league in Spain and the fourth national professional league, after LaLiga Santander and SmartBank for soccer, the Endesa League for basketball, and the F League for soccer.
