The Spanish Cristian Fernández has been proclaimed this month champion of the world of acuatlón, a result that allows Spain to win its second medal at the Campeonato del Mundo Multideporte Ibiza 2023.
In the town of Santa Eulària des Riu, the rider from Pontevedra crossed the finish line in first place ahead of the British Christopher Perham and Jimmy Lund, who were silver and bronze respectively.
Fernández did a great first segment of the swim, finishing third in T1, just three seconds off the lead. The Galician made a perfect transition starting second in the race on foot and with two kilometers to go he managed to pass the first classified, the British Lund, to end up proclaiming himself champion.
“I dedicate this victory to all my friends and all my family, who have always supported me; I have lived through difficult moments and they were always there. I am going to continue doing aquathlon, and I am also very excited about the 2025 World Cup in Pontevedra,” he declared.
In the women’s category, Sara Pérez Sala finished in fourth position, just a few seconds behind the German Céline Kaiser, who took bronze, while the Slovak Margareta Vrablova took silver and the Hungarian Zsanett Bragmayer took gold. For his part, Kevin Viñuela finished seventh, Ander Noaín finished ninth and debutant Susana Sevillano was twenty-eighth.
Meanwhile, the Spanish ‘Paratriarmada’ added nine medals in the Aquathlon World Cup. In Ptwc, Manuel Alfonso Betancort hung the gold; in Pts2, Javier Vergara was gold and Javier Marín, silver; in Pts3, Kini Carrasco also achieved a gold; in Pts4, silver for Carmelo Pérez and bronze for Bartomeu Caldentey bronze; in Pts5, Jairo Ruiz won the gold and Antonio Franco, the silver; and in Pts5, Cristina Miranda added another gold.
Among the spectators present in Santa Eulària des Riu was the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), Alejandro Blanco. “We must congratulate the international federation and the Spanish federation for this organizational success, I think that everything is going perfectly in this triathlon party. And of course, I want to congratulate Cristian Fernández who has done a spectacular world championship and what to say about Mario Mola , who only lacks the Olympic medal, which I hope will end up falling,” he said.
On Wednesday the Duathlon Cros World Cup will be held in the town of Sant Antony de Portmany. This Tuesday, athletes will have the opportunity to participate in an act for the planting of 50 fruit trees in the regenerative farm of Terra Viva Ibiza in Sa Forada to help create the largest edible forest on the island based on regenerative agriculture.
The Ibiza Multisport World Championship will be the first of the three major international events that Spain will host in this historic year for Spanish triathlon, since the European Championship will also take place in Madrid from June 2 to 4 and Pontevedra will arrive the best athletes from around the world in the Grand Final of the World Series from September 20 to 24.
