MADRID, 28 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Spain will travel to the European Throwing Cup, which will take place on March 11 and 12 in Leiria (Portugal), with 13 shortlisted, including six national champions and two record holders, led by hammer thrower Javier Cienfuegos and shot putter Belén Toimil.
“A total of 13 athletes (two women and 11 men) have been shortlisted to represent Spain in the European Throwing Cup after meeting the criteria established by the coach, José Peiró, and the Sports Directorate of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation. (RFEA)”, announced the federative entity in a statement on Tuesday.
The Spanish hammer record holder Javier Cienfuegos will captain the Spanish team in Leiria, where he already won individual silver in 2022, and will do so after winning gold (72.40 m) in the Spanish Winter Long Throw Championship held in Gavà last February 25.
The other two absolute champions Manu Quijera (javelin, 77.88 m) and Yasiel Sotero (discus, 59.95 m) will also be in the European Cup. The latter won his second national title on his return after recovering from a heart operation that kept him out of the competition in 2022. Carlos Tobalina, winner of the weight (20.03 m) in the Nacional, completes the quartet of Spanish champions Madrid Indoor Court on February 18.
In addition, the current national runners-up José Ángel Pinedo (weight), Diego Casas (disc) and Nico Quijera (javelin) will attend the event; while Miguel Gómez (weight), Marcos Moreno (disc), Juan Jiménez (hammer) and Pablo Costas (javelin) will compete in the Under-23 category.
In the female category, the Spanish weight record holder and national indoor champion Belén Toimil (18.27 m) will travel to Leiria after her participation in the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, which starts this Thursday. Arantza Moreno will also be in the Cup after winning her ninth consecutive javelin title in the ‘domestic’ Winter Long Throw championship with 56.60 m.
The European Throwing Cup will be held on March 11 and 12 in the Portuguese town of Leiria, which already hosted the competition last year and, with this, it will be for the fifth time in the last ten editions (2014, 2015, 2018, 2022 and 2023).
