The Asian player beat Isner in the Dallas final
Sebastián Báez wins the title in Córdoba
MADRID, 13 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Chinese tennis player Wu Yibing achieved his country’s first victory on the ATP circuit by beating (6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12)) American John Isner in the final of the tournament in Dallas (Texas, United States), while the Argentine Sebastián Báez was proclaimed champion in Córdoba.
The 23-year-old Wu saved one match point in the second set and another three in the third to make history for China and the ATP. The Asian player, who did not compete on the ATP Tour from March 2019 to January 2022 due to a series of injuries, won a marathon against favorite Isner, who hit 44 aces.
Last Monday, Wu became the second Chinese player to enter the ‘Top 100’ of the world ranking. Now, just a week later, he will reach number 58. The first 22 points of the deciding tie-break went to whoever served, before Wu forced Isner into a long forehand that decided a three-hour battle.
Meanwhile, Báez, who until this week had won only one game since last July, won the title in the Argentine final in Córdoba against his compatriot Federico Coria (6-1, 3-6, 6-3). The one from Buenos Aires, champion last year in Estoril, lifted the second title of his career in an even final.
