Carlos Queiroz, new Qatar coach

MADRID, 6 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who was in charge of the Iran team until last week, has been named the new Qatar coach and will replace the Spanish coach Félix Sánchez Bas as leader of the Asian team.

The 69-year-old former Real Madrid coach confirmed last week that he would not continue in charge of the Iranian team, which he led in the last World Cup in Qatar and with which he failed to reach the round of 16 after finishing third in the B Group.

Queiroz, after two frustrating spells in the Colombian and Egyptian teams, had assumed command in September, beginning his second spell in charge of the Persian team; he and he directed it between 2011 and 2019 and took it to the World Cups in Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018.

The hosts of the last World Cup, who did not make it past the group stage, were without a coach since the Barcelona coach’s contract expired at the end of last year.
