Djokovic closes his undefeated record in the ’round robin’ of the ATP Finals with a marathon against Medvedev

MADRID, 18 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic closed his ’round robin’ undefeated this Friday in the Red Group of the ATP Finals that are being played in Turin (Italy) after beating Russian Daniil Medvedev in three sets 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6(2).

In a duel with nothing at stake, except for the points for the ranking, since the one from Belgrade was classified for the semifinals as first and the one from Moscow was already eliminated, both fought a great “battle” that lasted for more than three hours and in which the Australian Open finalist served to win.

‘Nole’ did not turn his back on the clash and searched hard for a victory that he got back on track in the best possible way after a solid first quarter, especially when he played with first, and in which he made the most of his few options for the rest , with a key ‘break’ with 4-3 in their favor.

In any case, Medvedev did not throw in the towel either and tried to leave the Italian city with a win. The match got tougher and it took a toll on Djokovic, who saved three set points at 5-4 before finally falling into ‘sudden death’, in what was his first set conceded in these ATP Finals.

In the third and final set, the two tennis players maintained their level and barely made any concessions until the final stretch. The Serbian did not take advantage of his opportunity in the eighth and saw how he gave up his first serve of the tournament straight away, after an ‘eternal’ ninth game.

However, there he did not decide to take a break and save some energy either. The winner of 21 ‘Grand Slams’ took tennis out of him to equalize again and finally sentenced the Russian in the ‘tie-break’ to go to rest and think about the duel with the American Taylor Fritz.
