The city of Torrevieja (Alicante), one of the venues for the 2021 World Cup, will host the XXV International Tournament of Spain between October 28 and 30, where the Spanish women’s handball team will face Tunisia, Egypt and Switzerland before starting the European of Slovenia, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
The appointment, which will be held at the Palacio de los Deportes Tavi y Carmona, was presented this Tuesday in the plenary hall of the Torrevieja City Council, where the president of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM), Francisco V. Blázquez; the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón; and the Councilor for Sports of Torrevieja and former player of the ‘Guerreras’ Diana Box.
Blázquez stressed that the national team feels “at home” in the city after their great experience during the World Cup. “Spanish handball and world handball have an outstanding debt with Torrevieja. We have to return to the city and its inhabitants everything they did for us in the World Cup. A World Cup that was internationally recognized as a success for its health management, especially here “, he stated.
“The effort made by both the City Council and the Provincial Council were key to the success of this World Cup. Torrevieja was a talisman for the national team and was the epicenter of Spanish handball. It all started here, with that unconditional support. That is why we have come here to prepare a event as important as the European Championships, which will also mark our path for the 2024 Paris Olympics”, he continued.
For his part, the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, was also enthusiastic about the return of the national team. “When he suggested that the ‘Guerreras’ return to Torrevieja… we couldn’t say no. Not only will we have the tournament, but also the previous concentration of the ‘Guerreras’ for the European Championship. We couldn’t feel more proud,” he said.
Finally, the Councilor for Sports, Diana Box, has been sure that the city will turn to the selection. “All the affection that Torrevieja gave to the ‘Guerreras’ is being returned, without a doubt. Torrevieja is a fort, the headquarters of the ‘Guerreras’, who will be here preparing an event as important as the European Championship. They are clear that the city encourages them, supports them. In Torrevieja, the team won each and every one of the six games they played between the ‘Preliminary’ and the ‘Main Round’ of the World Cup. In addition, the city will be the setting for the presentation of the new official Joma kit that ‘Guerreras’ will wear at the continental event; The event, scheduled for Thursday, October 27, will consist of “a casual parade”, in which the players will show off the novelties of the new game clothing, as well as all the accessories of the national teams (tracksuits, sweatshirts, bags and other sports equipment).
