Real Sociedad and Real Madrid already know their rivals in the draw for the last round prior to the Women’s Champions League, in which the San Sebastian team will have a tough rival, the German Bayern Munich, while the madridista will face to the Norwegian Rosenborg.
Despite having managed to avoid the English Arsenal and the French Paris Saint-Germain, Real Sociedad could not avoid the third ‘coconut’ that was in the pot and will have to overcome Bayern from the powerful Bundesliga if they want to play the Champions League for the first time once in its entire history.
The Bavarian team were national runners-up last season and reached the quarterfinals of the last edition of the Champions League, a round worse than in the previous campaign when they were eliminated in the semifinals by FC Barcelona, later champion.
It has a high-level squad, with German internationals such as Lina Magull, one of the highlights in the last European Championship, Lea Schüller, Klara Bühl and Giulia Gwinn, and a European champion such as the English midfielder Georgia Stanway, who scored the goal that eliminated Spain in extra time.
Real Madrid had more luck in the draw, since being seeded, they had less important potential rivals. Finally they will have to play against the Norwegian Rosenborg, runner-up in their league last year.
Last season, the Nordic team was eliminated in the previous qualifying round against another Spanish team, Levante, who ended up knocking them out in extra time. It will be Real Madrid’s third rival in this preliminary phase after Sturm Graz and Manchester City.
The qualifiers are played over two legs, with the first leg on September 20 and 21 and the second leg on September 28 or 29. Real Sociedad will play at home in the first round and Real Madrid will play in the second.
