MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish team finished this Saturday with fourth position in the final of the 4×400 meter relay of the European Championship, which is taking place in Munich (Germany), and set a new Spanish record thanks to its timer of 3:00.54.
The national team had to go against the current after the first relay. Iñaki Cañal came second but handing over the baton complicated Lucas Búa’s start at the next post. It was then that Óscar Husillos added hope with a sensational comeback that made the podium possible.
In fact, Spain did not want to drop from the top three positions and Samuel García, fourth in the relay, was not far from a bronze that ended up in the hands of France (2:59.64), with the personal record of the Gauls. Silver went to Belgium (2:59.49) and gold went to the British (2:59.35).
The Spanish quartet, who won bronze at the Europeans four years ago, could not repeat the result despite their good performance, especially in the semifinals where they made it clear that they were candidates for the medal. In the women’s relay of the same distance there were not so many options.
Eva Santidrián, Aauri Lorena Bokesa, Sara Gallego and Berta Segura finished in eighth position, very far from the podium positions. His time of 3:29.70 did not serve to fight for the metals. The bronze went to the British team, the silver to the Poles and the gold went to the Dutch team led by Femke Bol, continental champion in the 400m and 400m hurdles.
In addition, the afternoon session this Saturday left the classification of the Barcelonan Xenia Benach to the semifinals of the 100 meters hurdles, with a time of 13.26, as well as the tenth and eleventh place of Irene Sánchez-Escribano and Carolina Robles, respectively, in the 3,000 meter hurdles.
