The Volta a Catalunya returns to Lo Port, the monumental peak of Terres de l’Ebre

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, which will be held from March 20 to 26, 2023, will return in its 102nd edition to Lo Port, the monumental summit of Terres de l’Ebre that will face the final ascent of Mont Caro for the fourth time in its history. story starting in Tortosa.

“Mont Caro is one of the toughest ports in Catalonia, and doing a stage through Terres de l’Ebre gave us this great opportunity that we could not miss,” said Rubèn Peris, president of the Volta.

As on previous occasions (1985, 1991 and 2017), the finish line will be located at the Mirador del Portell, with a total distance of 8.4 kilometres, an average gradient of 9 percent and maximum ramps of 20%.

“The port, of a special category, will make the 102nd edition one of the most mountainous and tough in memory, along with La Molina and Vallter. Three finals only suitable for first-level climbers,” explained the organization.

The stage start will have its stage in Tortosa, one of the most classic and historical towns of the Volta. The capital of Terres de l’Ebre has been linked to the race as a stage start or finish on 68 occasions.

On the other hand, in the 21st century, only one start has been made, in 2017, with the end of the stage in Reus. The route of the day will be defined in the coming months, and will value an ideal terrain not only for the competition, but also for the practice of sports cycling.

The winners of Mont Caro have so far been led by Colombians Alirio Chizabas (1985, with Kelme) and Lucho Herrera (1991, Manzana Postobón), and by former world champion Alejandro Valverde (2017, with Movistar).
