Goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo returns to Valladolid 13 years later

BARCELONA, 7 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Real Valladolid has confirmed this Thursday the incorporation of goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo from Villarreal until June 30, 2024, so he will return to Pucela 13 years later after training in the lower categories of the Castilian team and debuting with the first team in 2007 .

“He left home at the age of 19 as a young diamond in Spanish football and returns more than ten years later, consolidated as one of the best goalkeepers in LaLiga in recent times,” the club explained in a statement.

The man from Palencia has played the last nine seasons in the ranks of Villarreal CF, in LaLiga Santander, where he also wore the captain’s armband. He previously wore the rojiblanco at Atlético de Madrid between 2009 and 2013, for four seasons, with a half-year loan to Málaga.

With just turned 33, Asenjo’s career in international football has almost 300 official matches in the First Division, around 40 between the Champions League and Europa League.

But the blanquivioleta fans saw him make his debut in the top flight and will enjoy the return of the veteran goalkeeper. In 2007-08, when he came of age, Asenjo consolidated himself from matchday 14 as the starting goalkeeper in the elite of Spanish football, after having started that campaign with Promesas.

And in 2008-09 he continued as a starter in the Real Valladolid goal in the First Division with the exception of the four months he was out -between December and April- due to his first knee injury.

In total, Asenjo suffered up to four serious cruciate ligament injuries in his knees from which he has always returned with physical and mental strength. “His Castilian character and his roots in the colors of Real Valladolid make Sergio Asenjo a figure who, beyond his footballing qualities, also reinforces the sentimental section,” the club acknowledged.
