Girondins de Bordeaux is relegated to the French third division due to its economic problems

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Girondins de Bordeaux, six-time champion of the French league, has been relegated to Championnat National, the third division of Gallic football, by not offering the “necessary financial guarantees” to compete in the second category after its relegation last season, has confirmed this Tuesday the French Football Federation (FFF).

The FFF Appeals Committee confirms the decision of the National Directorate for Management Control (DNCG) to administratively relegate the ‘Marines et blancs’ on the understanding that it cannot bear the cost of participating in Ligue 2 due to its debts.

Its owner, the Spanish-Luxembourgish Gérard López, had recognized in recent days that in the event of an unfavorable decision from the DNCG, the club risked bankruptcy. The club can still file an appeal.

Girondins de Bordeaux, champion of the French league six times (1950, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1999 and 2009), relegated last season to the second division after finishing bottom of Ligue 1 with 31 points.
