MADRID, 12 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish athlete Javier Cienfuegos won silver this Saturday in the European Throwing Cup, in the event organized by the Portuguese town of Leiria, Spain’s first medal in this competition since 2017.
The national hammer record holder was proclaimed runner-up with a best attempt of 75.59 meters in the fifth round, achieving the first medal for Spain since Carlos Tobalina’s silver in weight in 2017 and the 17th Spanish metal in the 21 years of the tournament.
The heavy rain, forcing water to be drained from the throwing circle, did not prevent Cienfuegos from being motivated to climb to the podium with that fifth attempt, after two failures.
The Extremaduran signed a 75.59 that keeps him as the Spanish leader of the year and improving the 75.29 with which he entered the European Cup. The gold went to the Hungarian Bence Halász (76.69 m).
