Federer feels “positive” and hopes to return “at the end of the summer”

MADRID, 5 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer said on Saturday he hopes to return to competition at the “late summer” as his recovery from knee surgery will likely prevent the 20-time Grand Slam winner from playing Wimbledon.

The 40-year-old Swiss player underwent surgery on his right knee for the third time last August and has missed five of the last seven Grand Slams. Federer reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year, but his coach Severin Luthi said he “can’t imagine” the eight-time Wimbledon winner in London this summer.

Federer has targeted his return at the end of the summer or the beginning of the fall is a realistic target, which could mean he would be back for the 2022 US Open, which starts on August 29. This was explained this Saturday in an interview with the Swiss radio station SRF.

The one from Basel feels “positive” about his return. “It will certainly be a while,” Federer said. “The end of summer, beginning of autumn, [ahí es] where I am aiming for a comeback. “Is [la rodilla] well. Better. Obviously, I was on crutches for two months, so you have to start at the bottom,” she revealed.

“[La cirugía] it was certainly the right thing to do, the knee wasn’t right after Wimbledon [el año pasado]so I couldn’t continue. I am currently in three parts. First, the whole rehab, getting back on my feet at the start. Then learn to walk and develop everything,” he added.

“Right now I’m at the stage where I can start thinking about my comeback. I had a very good MRI a few weeks ago, which makes me feel very positive,” said Federer, whose ‘majors’ tally is still at 20 titles. and was already surpassed by Rafa Nadal at the Australian Open last January.

The timetable for Roger Federer’s recovery also means he will miss the second Grand Slam of 2022, May’s French Open at Roland Garros.
