The Spengler Cup is canceled for the second year in a row

MADRID, 25 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament, which is held in the Swiss town of Davos, has been canceled for the second year in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers of the contest said on Saturday.

The six-team event was scheduled to take place from December 26 to 31, but the organization has decided to cancel it after several players from the host team HC Davos tested positive for the Sars-CoV-2 virus shortly before Christmas and the local authorities will withdraw the health permit.

It is the sixth time in the tournament’s 98-year history that the Spengler Cup has been canceled. It is a tournament traditionally played between Christmas and New Years and typically features club teams and a Canadian team.

This year’s tournament consisted of hosts Davos, Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia), Froelunda (Sweden), Kalpa Kuopio (Finland), Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) and a team from the Swiss city of Bern.
