Spain achieves a historic victory over Great Britain in the European women’s wheelchair basketball

MADRID, 8 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish wheelchair basketball team achieved this Wednesday a historic victory against Great Britain (52-56) on the occasion of the penultimate day of the European group stage that is being played in Madrid until December 12.

The Spanish team, which had never beaten Great Britain, entered history with this triumph that confirms the good sporting moment experienced by the team led by Adrián Yáñez, already qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament. In fact, this Wednesday’s triumph prevents them from meeting the Netherlands, one of the great favorites for the title.

Spain had always knelt in front of the British. Both in the 2018 World Cup when he fell by 47-38, as well as in the 2019 European Championship, this time by 56-29. More recently, at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, Great Britain also beat Spain (43-62) in the match for seventh place.

This Wednesday history changed in a game that did not start in the best way for the Spanish, but the collective effort in defense and the incredible scoring of Vicky Pérez, with 24 points and 20 rebounds, were key for Yáñez’s players to add the triumph.

In the absence of a game to finish the group stage, Spain already knows that it will avoid the Netherlands in the semifinals, the current Paralympic champion and her rival this Thursday on the last day of the initial phase in the European Championship.
