The ten hopes of Leganés

Mehdi Nafti, Leganés’ new coach, he has a challenge ahead that is not easy. Despite having a squad called at the beginning of the year to the challenge of moving up in the category, now the pepineros aspire to remain in Second. Looking at the statistics of the last decade, the matter is complex, but not impossible: ten of the 17 teams that in that period added 10 points (the same as Leganés right now) or less at this point in the championship managed to save themselves. It assumes a high percentage of 58%. The other seven ended up going down.

Two are the closest examples. Last year, Zaragoza (ten points) and Alcorcón (eight points) occupied the last and third to last place in the classification. The two managed to save themselves and do so with some ease after finishing the championship with 50 and 48 points respectively. The mark of 50 points are those that have been set now in Leganés. On the downside of that season, Albacete (also ten points) and Castellón (eleven) finished in First RFEF despite having the same or more points than the Leganes.

Saved with fewer points than Leganés

It was more complicated at the time the Extremadura (9 points in 2018-2019), Albacete (8 points in 2014-2015), Hércules (8 points in 2012-2013) and Huesca (7 points in 2011-2012), the only three teams of this period, of the last decade, that reached matchday 13 with fewer points than now adds up to Leganes and that they ended up saving the category. They are also reference for Nafti and yours.

The other four teams that managed to save with ten or fewer points at this stage of the championship this decade were Córdoba (10 points in 2017-2018), Nàstic (10 points in 2016-2017), Mirandés (10 points in 2012-2011) and Nàstic again (10 points in 2011-2012).

Those who did not succeed, in addition to the aforementioned Albacete from last year, were Nàstic (9 points in 2018-2019), Sevilla Atlético (7 points in 2017-2018), Real Madrid Castilla (7 points in 2013-2014) and Cartagena (9 points in 2011-2012). The missing team, Guadalajara, had 9 points at this point in the championship in 2012 and finished out of the relegation places, but dropped for administrative reasons.

The half empty bottle

On the negative side of the balance, of the 40 teams that fell in the last decade, 14 (35%) did so with more points even than those currently added by Leganés. One piece of information, the latter, that in Butarque they take into account, but that they hope to banish at the end of a championship that has been twisted much more than expected. On Nafti and your ability to shake up the team is entrusted to change this negative trend.
