The Spanish men’s rugby sevens team has qualified for the gold quarterfinals for the first time this season and will fight for the title at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Hong Kong (China), while the women’s team has finished the appointment in ninth position.
Two victories and one defeat have allowed the ‘Leones7s’ to advance to the gold quarterfinals in the Asian city. After beating the United States on Friday, Spain put Australia in a lot of trouble, fifth in the overall standings, but ended up losing (12-7) despite going ahead at half-time thanks to Alejandro Laforga’s test.
The victory in the last match of the group stage against Japan (31-7) has certified the passage of Paco Hernández’s team to the gold quarterfinals and leaves them one step closer to eleventh position, which ensures that they remain a another year in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Spain will face the first of Group B, France, on Sunday.
For its part, the women’s team finished in ninth position after beating Japan (26-17). Those of Pedro de Matías dominated the meeting with the essays of Olivia Fresneda, Ingrid Algar, Eva Aguirre and Paula Requena.
