The president of Liverpool, against the Super League

“Is the Super League officially dead?”, Tom Werner, the president of Liverpool, has been asked in The Athletic, who has not hesitated to answer. “It’s certainly off Liverpool’s agenda. We’ve recognized it was a mistake. Beyond that, it’s in our rear-view mirror,” Werner said.

“We are happy with certain aspects of the new Champions League format. We continue to express our concerns about the football calendar and it is only going to get more complicated with the next World Cup (in November and December, in the middle of the European season),” added the Reds president, who has benefited from a specific UEFA measure.

“To the extent that it seems a little more likely that five Premier League teams could be in the Champions League, that’s obviously a good thing for Liverpool. But we’re delighted that the group stage is only eight games rather than 10”, reflects Werner, one of the supporters of the renewal of Jürgen Klopp.

Klopp and a future as CEO

About the German coach, the president of Liverpool has been full of praise and has commented on a curious anecdote: “Recently, I was talking with the CEO of Siemens, the German technology company. He was telling her about Jurgen’s talent. He would be a brilliant CEO wherever he landed. What I find about him is that he is obviously a great strategist and manages players very well. But her personality is so warm and welcoming. She’s kind, she has a sharp sense of humor, she’s humble.”

The praise for Klopp has not stopped there, and it is that Werner has placed him among the best coaches in the history of Liverpool. “I’m a bit of a historian by hobby, so I know the successes that preceded Jurgen. From the terms of (Bill) Shankly and (Bob) Paisley, to (Kenny) Dalglish and (Gerard) Houllier. I have had the privilege of seeing up close the work that Jurgen has done. It is undoubtedly one of the club’s great achievements. I know there is a new song that the fans have dedicated to Jurgen and I think it fits very well.”
