Jordán: “It has not been possible to see the potential of this Sevilla”

-Can it be said that the season is finally over?

– It has been an atypical year for many things. Casualties due to the pandemic, injuries… The worst thing was accumulating them in the most important stretch of the season. It has been a year of learning for the squad, the coaching staff and the club. I am more than convinced that it will help us a lot next year. The season in the League has been very good, we continue to make history and continue to grow. Many clubs would pay to be where we are.

-It seemed that as of January many injured people were going to recover, the Africans would return, signings would arrive… but it wasn’t like that, was it a stick?

– I am sorry because at no time have we had a regular stretch of being all at a great level and seeing the potential of the squad really. We couldn’t get it out. At the end of the season the mental wear and tear has weighed more than the physical. The game against Real Madrid hurt us a lot and that was a month ago, however, it seems that the team had been playing terrible for a long time. In the final stretch it cost us mentally.

-Did there come to be psychosis in the locker room with the injuries?

– After Christmas there was a moment in which each game one or two teammates fell. There have been things that could have been done better, others that have been done very well and others that will be analyzed by whoever has to analyze it. It has been a very strange season in that sense. We have a group of physical trainers and some very good and highly trained medical services.

-Do you understand the rarefied atmosphere that there was in some matches at the stadium in the final stretch of the season?

– It is understandable that people have been unhappy at the end of the season because that stretch has not been the best in terms of play and results. The team has gone through very difficult circumstances this year and I think people have understood that. People come to enjoy with their team and see them win and if it doesn’t happen it’s normal that the fans don’t like it. But I know that Sevilla fans value what we have done.

-The fact is that the last day against Athletic was a party.

– The atmosphere was amazing, beautiful. The fans deserved a victory and leave with a good taste in their mouths. They have been incredible all season and the last day was to make your hair stand on end. The goal is for that to be repeated a lot next year.

-How do you rate your season personally?

– Since my arrival I think I have had an important growth. I came from a modest club like Eibar, which I have enormous affection for, to an important club with ambition for everything and recognized in Europe. When I arrived at Sevilla I had never had to play every three days and the change is not easy. This year both the coach and the club with the renewal have shown me their confidence. It has been a year of great learning for me. I’ve had very good moments and other bad, but a little hand in hand with the team. But what stands out the most is everything he has learned.

– Is there something specific about that learning that you can highlight?

– Rather it is the accumulated experience of having played many minutes. But, for example, after being eliminated from the Champions League we all learned a lot of things that we couldn’t do again. And the final stretch of the season, which has been very difficult for us, I think it will also help us. The blockade that we have sometimes suffered, the anxiety to enter the Champions League… Those experiences are going to help us.

-Do you think that with everything you play you should contribute more in terms of assists or goals?

– This year I have been very bad in those aspects, it is the reality. It is also true that in my first year here, for example, I hit more free kicks and corners than this year, and that is reflected in the statistics at the end. As critical as I am of myself, I don’t hide that my numbers aren’t good. At a game level, I think I’ve had very good stretches and I’ve also had bad games, like everyone else. I am not a striker who solves you with genius when the team is bad. I am a team player who tries to help attack and defend, I am not a determining player in three quarters of the field. But I insist, I am critical and I think I should create more opportunities to find shots from the second line, as I did at Eibar, but here I don’t have seven wolves behind me if the shot goes wrong.

-There is a glimpse of a revolution in the locker room this summer and you are renewed, so you will be one of the veterans of the locker room next year. How do you take it?

– It seems that there are going to be changes, so we will try to form a very good group and atmosphere for next season. I know how important the club has been to me and I’m here to add to everything. I’m not going to hide, we’ll row in the good times and even more so in the bad ones.

-And will that revolution be with Lopetegui on the bench?

– He has a contract, he has had three incredible seasons, he is an incredible coach who has given the team an identity and with a tremendous ability to manage the group. If he has illusion, he will continue without any doubt. We are delighted with him, it was seen in our celebration with him at the Wanda. And because of the chants on the last day, I think the fans are also with him.
