Mourning in football for the death of Luis del Sol

Luis del Sol Cascajares, former player and former Real Betis technician, one of the myths in its history, died today at the age of 86 at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital.

His name is also found among the historical ones of Real Madrid, Juventus and Roma, in addition to the Spanish team. At the Turin club, where he was baptized as 'settepulmoni', he always stood out as one of their great stars, after he signed him from Alfredo di Stéfano's Real Madrid. In Turin he won a Scudetto and a Coppa d'Italia.

Del Sol, born in the Soria town of Arcos de Jalón, after a brief stint at Utrera, made his debut on October 17, 1954, in Badajoz, when Real Betis was playing in the Second Division. He was promoted to First with the Betic team in 1958, with Benito Villamarín as president, until he was transferred by Villamarín himself to Real Madrid, with whom he was two-time League champion, European champion and winner of the Intercontinental Cup. Later, he would return in 1972 to play one more year of verdiblanco before hanging up his boots.

He was also coach of the first team in 1986 and in the 2000-01 season, which culminated in promotion in Jaén. He was also linked to the technical secretariat at different stages. Since 2010 the Real Betis Sports City bears his name.
