After being at the Miami Open first clash in 2004, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams will clash again today at the opening match for this year’s US Open. The two players have a combined total of 28 Grand Slam titles, and this is something quite new for the opening match in US Open.
The showdown at the Arthur Ashe Stadium is not likely to make an impression if the sports experts are to be believed. The reasons are quite evident. While Williams has been losing out on account of her age, Sharapova is not in the best of her fitness.
Sports experts have been claiming that there are no further opportunities left for Williams. Apart from the current US Open, the Australian Open could be the last event for her. Sharapova on her part is suffering from a shoulder injury that she was operated 10 years ago and would perhaps need another surgery. She has also been going through a few issues with her forearm.

The showdown between the two former number ones will be the real defenders for both of them. Sharapova aged 32 is slightly under the top 100 because of the injuries. Williams, on her part, is aged 38 and has been nursing a back pain. She is seeded eight.
Williams has not won a major title since 2017 Australian Open, while Sharapova has been facing the drought since 2014 after she won the French Open.
