Ligue 1 could be reduced to 18 teams

Ligue 1 could be reduced to 18 teams from 2022. As reported Le Parisien, reflection has never been so present at the highest levels of French football and It is possible that the first division will reduce the quota of teams from 20 to 18 starting next year.

The downsizing of Ligue 1 teams would be a consequence of the Champions League reform. The UEFA launched last week the program of the new edition of the maximum continental competition and in it there would be three French teams directly, something that changes with respect to the current format, since only two teams from Ligue 1 access directly and one enters the previous. Therefore, having 18 teams would reduce the load of matches and could increase the level of a competition that has been in full swing for several seasons.

What's more, Ligue 1 reform can directly benefit Canal Plus France. The French audiovisual group currently has all the rights to French football and a reduction of teams could save 38 games per season, in a clear example that competitiveness would be affected for the better. However, the vote on the equipment limitation would have to be unanimous in the LFP Executive Committee and there are still many leaders who are skeptical about the measure.
