It is forbidden to leave a Canarian derby before the final whistle

If something has characterized the Canarian derby in this century when it is played in Gran Canaria, it is equality on the scoreboard. Neither team has achieved victories by more than one goal nor has he enjoyed the comfort, at least ephemeral, of advantages of two points or more. Furthermore, this parity between the island squads that have been facing each other since the turn of the millennium is confirmed by the fact that until this Saturday none had been able to score two goals.

These short results have allowed fans to witness matches from a frenzy. While it is true that not necessarily because of devilish rhythms and carousels of occasions but at least, which is not little, in a constant tension until the final whistle because a sudden final goal would overturn the moods without time to amend it.

Not surprisingly, in the Canarian collective imagination, a few occasions are kept in a safe place in which the derby in Gran Canaria closes with an investment of expectations typical of Hollywood. Like the one that was experienced this Saturday when the game slipped in 92 ‘and Lemos put a cross from the right wing that Larrea would play just enough so that Soriano could not react in time.

Following this story of the finals where smiles change banks, there is the closest memory of the 2018-2019 season when Suso in the 85th minute transformed the penalty that would leave the yellow stands speechless. and although the final result would be 1-1 there are draws that taste like bile and honey. Like the one in 2008, this with double twist. With 0-0 on the scoreboard, the central Gran Canaria Pablo Sicila put the Tenerife in front in 83 ‘, however the team led by Juan Manuel Rodríguez at that moment had time to unleash the madness after Marcos Marcos’ goal in 89′.

Finally, just as memorable as the one on this Saturday was the one that took place on May 10, 2014, in which they faced on matchday 38 a UD in fourth position who saw second place move away and a newly promoted Tenerife just three points behind the yellows (although one day of the derby before they had the same points). The match again headed for a draw, this time at zero. However, the delirium came in the discount when Vicente Gómez headed a free-kick from Momo and overtook the Gran Canaria, allowing them to extend their hope of reaching second place. The goal of yesterday, therefore, enters to compete with the one that occurred that season 2013-2014 although its qualifying repercussions do not have the significance of the one that faced those teams from Lobera and Cervera, both competing for a promotion with the vertigo of being only four days from the end of the league. The one that was lived this past Saturday has the similarities of two well-positioned teams and on the way to being candidates, those two from 2014 were four days away from being able to be First.
