“I suffer from mental health problems”

Danny Drinkwater (32 years old) wants to start a new stage after the ordeal he has lived in the Chelsea. After being one of the heroes of the champion Leicester, the English midfielder signed for the club five years ago Stamford Bridgea trip that did not go as expected and that ends after having played only 23 games.

I feel relieved because it was not a good situation neither for me nor for the club”, begins Drinkwater. “I am angry at how everything has been given and how they have treated me (…) I cannot blame the club. To some extent I can’t blame myself either. I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault because there have been a lot of uncertainties.”

A year after his arrival, Maurizio Sarri informed him with an hour to go until the market closed that he did not have him. “I arrived at the last market hour when Zola (his second) tells me not to consider him to be in the club’s plans. I was like ‘what?

“I have a young son. He is my priority…Why are you telling me this one hour before the market closes?? I need time”. Chelsea offered him to go to foreign teams, but he decided to stay until January.

Drinkwater thinks he has lost his best football years. “Yes, you feel like you’ve wasted those five years… If I’d stayed at Leicester, if I’d been injured, if they’d treated me better… it’s all ‘what if’.”

To this situation was added a bad personal moment. The press questioned his professionalism and accused him of having an easy life. “That was not true (…) living life? (…) you are aware that you are not involved in football. It is true that he could do many thingsbut deep down there are things that burn you”.

I suffer from mental health problems. My grandfather died, my father was diagnosed with leukemia, and I lost my dog. I started driving under the influence of alcohol. It was not me. I made a huge mistake. In addition, I was also fighting for my son (…) I was lost, ”says Drinkwater. “When football is going well, everything else seems easier, but when it’s not going well, everything becomes heavier,” he says.

The Englishman has regained his confidence at Reading and is now looking for a new destination to relaunch his sports career. He feels like it. “i love to win. There are options. It’s just about making the decision.”
