How much money does Villarreal earn for going to the semifinals of the Champions League?

Villarreal made history again this Tuesday by beating the ‘almighty’ Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The feat was completed at the Allianz Arena thanks to a goal from Samu Chukwueze that decided the tie for Unai Emery’s men.

The Spanish team will therefore be among the top four in Europe for the second time after the feat of 2006, the last time the ‘yellow submarine’ managed to qualify for the semi-finals of the most important club competition in the world. That time, Arsenal dropped the Castellón team from the grand final in Paris in which Frank Rijkaard’s Barça ended up achieving glory.

Villarreal makes history by defeating Munuch’s Bayern

Villarreal will seek to avenge the figure of Riquelme (he then missed a penalty that sent the tie to extra time that allowed them to continue dreaming) after a very complicated night in which the Germans dominated for much of the game. The yellow team held on as best they could until Robert Lewandowski equalized the contest with a goal in the 52nd minute of the match.

However, Villarreal knew how to recover and take advantage of the 1-0 first leg with a magnificent counterattack led by Parejo that ended at the feet of Gerard Moreno. He knew how to find Samu Chukwueze unmarked on the right wing, who did not fail inside the area and put the finishing touch to a night in which he ended up suffering unsuccessful attacks from the rival. The referee ended up blowing the whistle for the end of the game and the groguet madness was unleashed on the lawn of the Bavarian Coliseum.

How much does Villarreal earn for going to the semifinals of the Champions League?

Villarreal is already waiting for a rival in the semifinals. Gerard Moreno, Parejo and company will fight the winner of the tie between Liverpool and Benfica. In the first leg, the English team beat the Portuguese 3 goals to 1, which places them as favorites to advance to the next phase of the continental tournament.

Meanwhile, Villarreal (just like Real Madrid, who beat Chelsea for their part) have already emerged victorious from this edition of the Champions League, at least financially. And it is that the team chaired by Fernando Roig has already pocketed a total amount of almost 60 million euros.

The exact figure is 57.6 million, which is broken down as follows: 15.6 million for playing in the group stage; To which are added 9.3 million for the three victories (two against Young Boys and one against Atalanta), and a draw against Atalanta in that aforementioned first phase. To this are added the 9.6 million for playing the round of 16 against Juventus and 10.6 million for going through the quarterfinals against Bayern. And with yesterday’s feat, and its corresponding pass to the semifinals, Villarreal will enter 12.5 million more.

Villarreal doubles the income of the Europa League

To give us an idea of what this means for the Spanish club, it should be remembered that, last year, for winning the Europa League, Villarreal won a total prize of around 30 million euros. 20 of them for the results obtained throughout the competition, 3.5 for the so-called ‘market pool’ and another 3.5 for ensuring their participation in the European Super Cup.

In other words, by reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, the yellow team has achieved income that is practically double that obtained last season with their first European victory against Manchester United. To all this, if the feat continued, and managed to qualify for the final, the team would enter 15.5 million euros more, to which another 4.5 would be added in the event of winning it. Therefore, Villarreal is still eligible for a total amount of around 77.6 million euros, to which what was earned by the ‘market pool’ would be added.

Like this it is the distribution of money and prizes of the Champions

Group stage: Each team receives 15.64 million euros for participating in the group stage. In that phase, each club will receive 2.8 million for each win, 930,000 euros for a draw and nothing to lose. Then, in the knockout rounds, the breakdown will be as follows:

Classification for the round of 16: 9.6 million.

Classification for the quarterfinals: 10.6 million.

Qualification for the semifinals: 12.5 million.

Classification for the final: 15.5 million.

Champions Champion: 4.5 million.

Coefficient awards. What is the Market Pool?

UEFA also saves an amount that amounts to 600 million to distribute by the coefficient of each team, taking into account the last 10 years. The one with the lowest coefficient will receive 1.137 million euros and the one with the highest, 36.38.

As for that so-called ‘market-pool’, there will be 300 million to distribute. Audiences and television rights will be taken into account and the clubs will not know how much money they will enter until it is calculated once the competition is over.
