Gauff hits again when reaching the quarterfinals for the first time

Coco Gauff, the girl who surprised everyone when she reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon at the age of 15, qualified for the first time on Monday for the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. The American, who is now 17, stepped over Ons Jabeur (6-3 and 6-1 in 53 minutes) and she will face Barbora Krejcikova, the 25-year-old Czech doubles player at Roland Garros on Wednesday, who has broken into the individual scene and has a nine-win streak with which she achieved against Sloane Stephens was also forceful (6-2 and 6-0 in 67 minutes).

Gauff and Jabeur met for the fourth time in a duel of junior tournament champions in Paris. The American conquered him in 2018 and the 26-year-old Tunisian in 2011. A few weeks ago in Charleston the second had triumphed, which is behind in the face-to-face (1-3), but this time she did not find a way to prove to the prodigious Coco, that he only made nine forced errors, thanks to his game based on patience and consistency.

In the Suzanne Lenglen, Krejcikova disarmed a Stephens, a finalist in 2018, who had been stomping, but that despaired before the safety and the good hand of his rival, who came from eliminating a top-10 like Svitolina in the third round. She barely needed to land winning shots (just 10) to control the game while waiting for the mistakes of the 2017 US Open champion. He had never gone this far in the individual tournament of a Grand Slam. In doubles she was champion of Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2018 with her compatriot Siniakova.

Sakkari destroys Kenin

Maria Sakkari, 17th favorite, swept the fourth and finalist in 2020, Sofia Kenin (6-1 and 6-3 in 1:08), to become another of the tennis players who will reach the quarterfinals this Monday for the first time in a major, along with Gauff and Krejcikova. The 25-year-old Greek had won the most recent match between the two, this year in Abu Dhabi, but at Grand Slams (Wimbledon and US Open 2018) the American had always prevailed. Sakkari will face the Polish Iga Swiatek, current champion, who submitted the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (6-3 and 6-4 in 92 minutes) on Wednesday. Kenin doubled his rival on unforced errors (32-15).

Results, table and calendar.
