Esther González and Maitane López’s Gotham conquers the NWSL

A goal from Granada gave the title to the team led by also Spaniard Juan Carlos Amorós against Megan Rapinoe’s OL Reign, who said goodbye to football injured

MADRID, 12 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Gotham FC has won its first title in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the top women’s soccer division in the United States, after beating OL Reign (1-2) on Saturday with a crucial goal from Spain’s Esther González , all in the bitter farewell to Megan Rapinoe, who retired from soccer injured.

The forward from Granada, one of the three Spaniards in the New York team along with Maitane López and coach Juan Carlos Amorós, scored the winning goal with a header in extra time of the first half, after taking advantage of a throw-in. Midge Purce corner.

Previously, in the 3rd minute, the 2019 Ballon d’Or winner Megan Rapinoe had to say goodbye to football in tears after injuring her left leg after slipping on her own and being forced to leave the field of play amid the applause of the fans.

Before Esther González’s goal, the New Yorkers had taken the lead in the 24th minute after Purce, MVP of the match, assisted Lynn Williams so she could beat the rival goalkeeper with a cross shot. Seattle tied four minutes later with a goal from Rose Lavelle.
