Just four days after his contract expired and after a few months of rumors and unconfirmed news, Vela cleared up the unknown regarding his future this Sunday and guaranteed his continuity in the Los Angeles team in statements to ESPN.
“Yes, the truth is that it was a matter of time. Obviously, both parties were very excited to close the contract,” he explained in the preview of the MLS match that LAFC beat New York Red Bulls 2-0. Vela himself assisted Colombian Cristian Arango with the first goal and his team consolidated as leader of the MLS Western Conference.
“It’s always business and if one goes one way, the other goes another. But when both sides want to get to the same place, it always ends up happening and that’s how it happened. I’m very happy to be able to continue here. Until I win a title I won’t I want to leave here. It’s something that motivated me to continue and hopefully it can be this year,” added Vela, 33.
On the other hand, the Mexican praised the signings of Bale and Chiellini. “The team was already one of the favorites (in MLS) before the latest additions. And now with the players who are getting involved, I think they make the team and the people even more excited,” Vela said.
“I love playing with good people and that people like that come is something very positive for everyone. I’m looking forward to playing with them,” he added, mentioning that now it’s up to the LAFC players to “show” all the value that they are supposed to .
Vela arrived at LAFC in 2018 from Real Sociedad as the great star of this ambitious soccer project that in just a few years has become one of the leading clubs in MLS.
The striker has played 101 games in the MLS in which he has scored 63 goals.
The Mexican will continue as captain and leader of the team that on Saturday announced the incorporation of Bale, who will arrive as a free agent and for a year once his relationship with Real Madrid ends at the end of this month.
Five-time champion of the Champions League with Real Madrid, Bale, 32, guided Wales to the second World Cup in its history this June by defeating Ukraine in the playoffs for Qatar 2022.
In addition to the renewal of Vela and the signing of Bale, the team coached by Steve Cherundolo announced this month the addition of Giorgio Chiellini, a great defensive benchmark for Juventus and the Italian national team.
