Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig insist on their no to the Super League even if its format changes

BERLIN, Oct. 20 (dpa/EP) –

The main clubs in the German Bundesliga are clear that they will continue to turn their backs on being part of a future Super League, even if their founders decide to change their format and not make it so closed.

The German teams already refused to get involved in this project when it came to light in April 2021 and which initially brought together a dozen participants from the Spanish, English and Italian leagues, although now only Real Madrid, FC Barcelona remain as visible heads and Juventus.

After the first refusal, its founders have already warned that they are not going to close the door and that 25 percent of the places will be open, something that does not seem to convince Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig either.

“The attempt to create a Super League failed miserably a year and a half ago. We have made our position clear again and again since then,” Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn recalled in statements to the ‘Bild’ newspaper published on Thursday.

For his part, the executive director of Borussia Dortmund, Hans-Joachim Watzke, also assured that they are not interested in this project. “The Champions League has an absolutely exceptional format, especially from 2024. Also, I feel that UEFA is in very good hands because they also have smaller clubs in mind,” he warned.

His counterpart at RB Leipzig, Oliver Mintzlaff, stressed that they have not changed their position either. “We already clearly expressed our position in April 2021 and rejected plans to establish a Super League entirely. Our position has not changed since then,” he said.
