“Pedro Sánchez is a strategist and a survivor, I don’t see him calling elections anymore”

Jordi Évole returns this Sunday (9:30 p.m.) to La Sexta with a new season of his program. Start with Juan and Medio as the first guest and in the coming weeks he will be seen with Lolita, Dani Martin, Eduard Fernandez o Pepe Mujicaformer president of Uruguay and, for the moment, the only politician who will sit down with Évole this time. “It’s part of my evolution, I wanted to make a less political program, although I couldn’t imagine doing such a personal format either,” he acknowledges. Informalia in this interview.

Although Évole tries to distance himself a little from that political terrain, it is inevitable to talk to him about how he sees things in this highly tense Spain in which a simple Promotion of his program with Mario Vaquerizo as the protagonist earned him numerous criticisms. “Some believe that two people who think differently cannot get together,” he laments. Although one thing is clear: “Polarization is in the networks, in the media and in politics. The street is much calmer.”

The presence of Mario Vaquerizo in the promo for the new season aroused strong criticism. Did you expect it or was it more than you imagined?

It was more. I could expect that some would react in that way that some go: that two people who think differently cannot get together. Mario Vaquerizo and I don’t think the same politically, because he usually speaks well about Ayuso’s policies and I don’t, but that doesn’t have to be an impediment for us to share a meal, an interview… Furthermore, Mario has made a promo in which It does something that I value a lot, which is laughing at yourself.

Have we become that sectarian? Are we that polarized?

Polarization is very much in the networks, in the media and in politics. The street is much quieter, the people are friendly. No one on the street has reproached me for doing a promo with Vaquerizo.

Should we visit bars more and social networks less to know what people really think?

The network has something of artifice, because the messages have no intonation, face or look. And that is essential to decode each other’s messages well. A conversation in a bar or on a bench in the square will always be richer.

But politicians do create tension and polarize. Are we their puppets? Do they always want us angry?

The public is smarter than we think and is not so easily manipulated by politicians. Yes they may have some influence, but I don’t think it’s huge.

But is it good for them that we are angry with each other?

The politicians are angry with each other and it seems that an agreement on nothing is possible. They have to be very unique things, like the ALS law. And that gives a little courage, because we vote, the results are very devilish and we have to make pacts. And we have to get used to the culture of the pact, because the era of absolute majorities is over.

On Sunday you premiere the season with Juan y Medio as a guest. Why don’t you do as many political interviews anymore?

It is part of my evolution and is also due to the fact that I have changed formats. My desire was not to make a program as political as before, but I couldn’t imagine making such a personal program either. I have been surprised, because the guests come willing to explain things that other places do not tell, and that is very nice.

I find it hard to believe that you don’t feel like interviewing Errejón, for example. Have you tried it?

Yes, but it is not as priority as before. This season there will be Pepe Mujica and possibly another politician who is not confirmed.

Did Errejón say no directly to you or did he think about it?

I didn’t make the call. My team did it and they didn’t give me any more information. I understood that the negotiation had not prospered.

Are you still interested in interviewing Ayuso? Are you still proposing it?

Yes, yes. We keep proposing it to him every now and then, but he’s not up to the task.

You had a good relationship with Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, maybe he can help you convince her…

With Miguel Ángel Rodríguez we managed to do a section in the program called What you need is MAR and we laughed a lot. But it’s not clear to me that he is rowing in favor of that interview.

Now he also has an interview. In fact, it has given several in recent days.

As an interviewee now he is a cannon. He’s pulling the strings again, which is something he’s excited about.

Would it be a good time to interview Pedro Sánchez, taking into account the judicial processes that are taking place around him?

Yes, any time is a good time to talk to a President of the Government and now would be too.

You know politics well. There are those who say that they are going to call elections soon. Do you believe it?

I don’t think Pedro Sánchez is going to call elections, honestly, but it’s just intuition, I have no information. I am not clear about what all the processes that are open around Pedro Sánchez will end up with. We may find ourselves with much ado about nothing.

Will the parliamentary support you have allow you to advance in the legislature?

They are not strong supports, because it has been seen that there are many PSOE proposals that fail to move forward, because they cannot reach agreement with all the parties with whom they need to agree, which are not few. If the budgets are not approved, they will be extended, but I do not see Pedro Sánchez calling elections soon.

Can he have more lives than he has shown to have?

I never rule out anything about Pedro Sánchez’s ability to surprise.

How would you define him as a politician?

I see him as a great strategist. That’s what I would tell you.

His critics say that he is cold, that he is willing to do anything…

Sometimes we form very stereotyped ideas that are passed around by word of mouth. This idea of a cold and calculating Pedro Sánchez has been widely established, but people who have dealt with him more than me tell me that is not the case. When I’ve been with him, actually when I’ve been with any president, they are always very nice people over short distances.

You have interviewed him at all stages of his life, when he was at the top, when he was defenestrated…

He seems like a true survivor to me.

On Sunday you will compete against the return of CQC, a legendary television program.

Oh yeah?

Yes, Telecinco premieres it at 10:00 p.m. Therefore, you will spend at least half an hour with them.

Well, delighted. I am in some way the son of Caiga Quien Caiga from Wyoming, Tonino, Pablo Carbonell, Sergio Pazos…

You have always said that you are happy in La Sexta and that you like your program to be seen openly. Do you receive offers from platforms to bring your program to streaming?

Some have arrived, but I still like that challenge of summoning the viewer on a specific day and time. In addition, it is a program that is watched as a family. I meet very young people who tell me that they have been seeing me for 15 years because their parents forced them to see it and now they are the ones forcing their parents because I bring people that they may not know, like C. Tangana, Morad…

Where you have made the leap is to TVE as producer of the program Al cielo con ella, presented by Henar Álvarez. Do you have more projects in the public chain?

Not today. We are with the Henar program, and we are very happy with the result. It is a unique format on television and we are very excited. Henar is an incredible communicator.
