The sports radio presenter and announcer Pepe Domingo Castaño has died “suddenly” at the age of 80 this Sunday morning in Madrid, confirmed the program Tiempo de Juegos on the COPE Network, in which he participated.
“The day we never wanted to come has arrived. This morning Pepe Domingo Castaño died at the age of 80. We don’t know what to say because Pepe was everything to us,” reported Tiempo de Juego. “He died at the Zarzuela Hospital in Madrid. Pepe left suddenly, surrounded by his loved ones,” he reported.
Born in Lestrove (A Coruña) in 1942, Castaño began his career on Radio Galicia, an affiliate of Cadena SER, before going to Madrid to start his career as a singer and present his first music program, ‘Club Musical’.
He also presented other programs such as ‘Biblioteca Joven’, ‘A todo rhythm’ or ‘Voces de 45’, and in 1973 he made the jump to Cadena SER. In 1975 he won the first of his Ondas awards with ‘El gran musical’, the same year in which he became number 1 on Los 40 with ‘Neniña’.
On TVE he presented, from 1979 to 1983, the program ‘300 millions’, although his great fame among the public came to him, starting in 1988 as the voice of ‘Carrusel Deportivo’, where he worked in tandem first with Antonio Martín Valbuena and later with Paco González.
In 2010 he left the network after González was fired and signed for COPE, where he has worked until now. “The radio will never sound the same again without you. This family will never beat the same again without you but, for you, we will continue… We still don’t know how we are going to do it but we will continue to fill the void that you leave us alive and radio. We love you Pepe, we love you and we will always love you as you have taught us, with joy and united,” his colleagues indicated on social networks.
