MADRID, 31 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
English striker Bethany Mead was chosen this Sunday as ‘Best Player’ of the tournament at Euro 2022 in England, where she also won the Golden Boot, with six goals and five assists, in the host’s title at Wembley.
England beat Germany (2-1) in extra time, with goals from Toone and Kelly. Mead remained unmarked and in fact could not finish the final injured, but her work was already done to be the top scorer of the tournament, with the misfortune in addition to Alexandra Popp.
The German, who also added six goals before the final, was injured in the warm-up prior to the start of the match at Wembley. Mead and Popp equaled the all-time record in a Women’s EURO final phase held by Germany’s Inka Grings from the 2009 edition. Thus, the Golden Shoe was aimed squarely at Mead, with teammate Alessia Russo scoring four goals, and finally without not score either.
On the other hand, after the final whistle, UEFA chose Mead as the tournament’s MVP. The 27-year-old Arsenal striker succeeds Lieke Martens (Netherlands), who received the award in 2017.
