Barça and Madrid hold the economic pulse to the Premier

Barcelona and Real Madrid are still the great locomotives of Spanish football and the only teams that can show the same economic muscle in terms of income compared to the most powerful clubs in the Premier. This is evidenced by the distribution of television rights from last season (2020-21). Only the two teams from Manchester and Liverpool would earn more for this concept than Barcelona, which is still the ‘king’ of televisions in Spain. Madrid, for its part, would also have Chelsea ahead.

The Premier continues to be the competition that earns the most money for televisions. During the past season they received 2,518.44 million pounds; while LaLiga Santander had 1,444.7 million euros. Despite the notable difference on the aggregate, among the great teams there is not so much. Barcelona and Real Madrid, the two greats of Spanish football, would be on the same scale.

In a comparison between both competitions, Manchester City would win 168.72 million euros (using an average conversion calculation for the 20-21 season set at 1.11), the United would be the second (167.61) and Liverpool the third (€ 166.38M). In fourth position would already enter the Barcelona (165.6) and Real Madrid would be in sixth place of those who enter the most on television with 163 million euros, surpassed by Chelsea, fifth, with 164.94 million. Atlético, which earns 130 million, would not be in this Top-10 of the teams that receive the most from television in the Premier-LaLiga comparison.

One of the reasons why Barcelona and Madrid can fight face to face with the Premier is the difference in the economic distribution of both leagues. In Spain, between the one that earns the most and the one that least cannot be higher than 3.5. Having to assign this excess to the compensation fund (aid for descendants, CSD, RFEF …). Between Barcelona, the one that won the most on TV in 20-21, and Huesca, the one that least, was 118.8 million euros. Meanwhile, in the Premier, the difference between the first (City) and the last in revenue (Sheffield United) was 55 million. Half that in LaLiga Santander.
