The Spanish women’s soccer team has a new appointment with history this Tuesday (10:00 a.m. Peninsular time) in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with the dispute in the Eden Park Stadium in Auckland of their semifinal duel against the rocky and experienced Sweden.
Spain has broken down historical barriers during this World Cup and after its victory in extra time (2-1) against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, it is only two games away from lifting its first major title at an absolute level and becoming champion in the world with a generation of footballers who have been chasing this dream for a long time.
The national team has never played in a final of a major international competition either, and to achieve that first objective they will have to leave Sweden on the road, a team with a long tradition in women’s football, third in 2019 and which has arrived undefeated and with so only two goals conceded in this penultimate round, leaving behind the United States, champion in 2015 and 2019, and Japan, champion in 2011.
In what is supposed to be a clash of styles, the ‘Red’ will have to reach their best version again to get rid of a Swedish team, current Olympic runner-up and with level players like Fridolina Rolfö, Kosovare Asllani or Magdalena Eriksson.
