Women’s U-20 football team loses its world throne

MADRID, 16 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s U-20 football team will not be able to repeat its world title after being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the World Cup being played in Colombia after losing 1-0 in extra time to Japan, who took revenge for the recent setbacks.

The team led by Sonia Bermúdez will not be able to fight for the trophy that the generation led by Salma Paralluelo or Inma Gabarro won in 2022 and national women’s football will lose one of the three world thrones it defended, leaving it with the Absolute and U-17.

Spain had recently made a bitter impression on Japan in the last major competitions at lower levels, such as in the final of the last U-20 World Cup or in the quarter-finals of the U-17 World Cup, but this time they were unable to beat the Asian team in an even match.

Lucía Corrales, after a great individual action, had the best chance for the Spanish with a shot off the post in the second half and where the goalkeeper Eunate Astralaga had a very outstanding performance because the Japanese enjoyed good opportunities.

The match went into 30 minutes of extra time and was decided by a lucky shot from behind by Hiromi Yoneda in the final stretch of the first half of extra time that the defending champions were unable to stop and at least force a penalty shootout.
