LONDON, (PA Media / dpa / EP)

The Wolverhampton-Watford and Liverpool-Leeds United matches, the traditional Boxing Day of the Premier League scheduled for Sunday, were suspended this Thursday, after the request for postponement made by the ‘Hornets’ and the ‘reds’, given the increase of contagions within their teams, according to the competition in a statement.

“Following the requests for postponement from Liverpool and Watford due to COVID-19, the Premier League Board met this morning and sadly agreed to suspend the Boxing Day matches of the two affected clubs,” the Premier’s statement said. League.

The competition said its objective is “to provide as much clarity as possible” in this situation, but “unfortunately sometimes postponements are communicated on short notice, since safety is the priority.” “The league will strive to keep fans informed if games are at risk on any matchday,” he added.

The Premier League also determined that Leeds United’s training ground will be closed after consulting the United Kingdom’s Health Security Agency, at the same time that it regretted that Watford continues with a high number of infections after their previous match against the Crystal Palace was also suspended for the same reason.

The Premier League clubs opted on Monday to continue with the competitions despite the growth in the number of positive cases, but this Thursday the coaches and players of the teams met again to try to find a solution to the situation currently facing the competition.
