Wolfsburg, Barça’s rival in the women’s ‘Champions’ final

MADRID, 1 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Wolfsburg beat Arsenal this Monday after extra time in the second leg of the women’s Champions League semifinals (2-2, 2-3 after extra time) and will be Barça’s rival in the final, which will be played next June 3 in Eindhoven (Netherlands).

The German team, champion of the ‘Champions’ in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, guaranteed their presence in the Dutch city after winning a tie that ended 2-2 in the first leg and that repeated the result at the end of time regulation this Monday (2-2).

Thus, the duel at the Emirates Stadium, where there was a record number of spectators in a women’s soccer match in England (60,063), had to be decided in extra time, where a goal by Pauline Bremer in the 118th minute put the Germans in their sixth final of the maximum continental competition.

Before, the Swedish Stina Blackstenius had been in charge of overtaking the ‘Gunners’ after 11 minutes, although the Dutch Jill Roord tied the contest for the visiting team before the break. Alexandra Popp, in the 58th minute, came back for the Germans and the Scottish Jennifer Beattie made it 2-2 in the 75th minute.

In extra time, Bremer came close to making it 2-3 at 112 minutes, before McCabe hit the bar just a few minutes later. The German, with time almost up, was in charge of putting Wolfsburg in the final at Phillips Stadium.

There he will meet again with FC Barcelona, against whom he was eliminated in the semifinals last year (2-0 and 5-1). The Teutons prevailed in the previous precedents, in the quarterfinals of the 2013-14 campaign (3-0 and 0-2), where they would become champions, and in the ‘semis’ of the 2019-20 season (0-1).
