“With what we have suffered, the Cup would be a great joy”

Silvia Meseguer (Alcañiz, 32 years old), popularly known as 'Mesi', attends AS in the run-up to the Cup semifinals against Levante (Thursday, 8:00 p.m. in Butarque). Atlético captain and veteran of women's football, It is more than an authorized voice to speak about the bad situation of the rojiblancas and the illusions that are chewed up before the Cup, where they are 90 minutes away from a new final.

The Huesca, who has juggled to balance the ball with medical books, He has already started his countdown to hang up his boots. After his retirement, his other passion awaits him, health. How does Atlético get to this Cup final four?

We are not at the level expected nor are we being regular in the League, but in the end the Cup is a different competition and we have the opportunity to be in another final. This completely changes the situation and we are going to go for it.

As he says, it has been a difficult season. How are you living it on a personal level?

It's being tough because we weren't used to being in this situation. Things have been complicated in many ways from the beginning and it was not only a factor that made us sign such a season. There are many things in which we have been wrong and we have to assume that responsibility and from now on know that to be at the top we have to continue doing things well and, for this, we will have to start again from scratch.

What do you think has failed above all?

I can't tell you just one cause. If there was only one, it would be very easy to fix it. We no longer started the season well, with injuries. And little things have been added with many changes from one year to the next. It is difficult to adapt and things do not work out. Now we have to assume that we have not been at the level expected and each one of us assume responsibility. In the end, football is like that. You can be up one year and not the next. You have to assume it and keep working to get back on top.

Are you motivated by the Super Cup, which you got badly at and won?

Yes. In the end it is a different competition and on top of a single match, anything can happen. Soccer is what it has and this is what we are focused on now. We know that we can win a game. A final would await us and we are very excited.

What do you expect from the Levante?

Levante have had a very good and very regular season. La Liga is the fairest competition and they are shining in it. We know that it is a very strong team, with an Esther who is having a spectacular year. It will be difficult, but we have our weapons and we will try to take advantage of them to reach the final.

Do you have any plans to stop Esther, top scorer in the League?

We don't just have to look at Esther. If Levante is up, it's for the whole team. Yes, it is true that she is the one who has scored the most goals. But, we are not going to focus only on her to defend, but on the whole team. This is the best way to win.

In the final, what do you prefer, Madrid derby or Classic?

I think this is not the time to talk about the final. First is the Levante game and if we think further, we will not be in the final. Winning at Levante is complicated in itself and, if we pass, it does not matter who is there.

Do you feel a certain envy of everything that Barça is achieving, which has just won the first Champions of Spanish women's football?

Yes. Barça is at a spectacular level. He has shown it over the years and he deserves it. In the end, being the European champion is no accident. It is because they have done things very well for a long time. Therefore, we must congratulate them because a few years ago that a Spanish team was champion of the Women's Champions League was unthinkable. Above all, I am very happy for Marta Torrejón, who has experienced everything bad about women's football. She is one of the veterans and is one of the pillars that has made this Barça continue to grow.

What does it mean for Atlético to win this title?

After this year and with what we have suffered, the Cup would be a great joy. With two games you can get a title and that is what we hold on to and what we want to achieve.

After eight seasons at Atlético, will your last active season be at rojiblanco?

Yes. Yes. I will stay here and will continue as rojiblanco until I retire next year.

The pandemic has changed football and even its future, right? She will hang up her boots to be a doctor with a very different situation …

The current situation means that we can enjoy football less with the fans. Hopefully soon all this changes. Regarding my future, it is what I have always wanted and I still have the same desire.

Do you have any dreams before retiring?

Now that I see my retirement coming up, the only thing I want is to continue enjoying this sport and that the time that I have left in each training session and each game will allow me to enjoy it to the fullest.
