We advanced it in Informalia at the end of October: Toño Sanchís is not doing so bad. The documentary 900 days without Anabelavailable on Netflix, has become one of the most watched worldwide on the platform. Composed of three chapters, this project addresses the kidnapping and murder of Anabel Seguraa young woman who lived in the exclusive urbanization of La Moraleja, in Madrid. Anabel was kidnapped with the purpose of demanding a million-dollar ransom from her family, but her captors ended up murdering her.
Toño Sanchís, known for his past as a representative of Belén Esteban and other celebrities, has had a prominent role in the success of this documentary, since he is listed as one of its executive producers. Their contribution was carried out through Loveo Audiovisual, a limited company whose corporate purpose includes the “production, marketing and broadcasting of television programs, as well as the co-production, filming, distribution and marketing of motion pictures“.
This success in his role as a producer comes after a resounding decline in his career as a representative of media personalities. For years, Sanchís was alongside some of the most recognized collaborators on Spanish television, such as YLenia Padilla, Kiko Matamoros, Mila Ximénez and Terelu Campos. However, his career began to falter after the media dispute with Belén Esteban, which ended with a resounding victory for the television station.
The relationship between Toño Sanchís and Belén Esteban went beyond the professional: San Blas completely trusted him, to the point of including him in her will. However, in 2015, their relationship was completely broken due to a tax problem. As Esteban explained, she discovered that she owed nearly 600,000 euros to the Treasury due to various irregularities that she was unaware of, since she fully trusted that her financial situation was in order.
The problem not only lay in the debt, but in the inability to face it. Belén Esteban confessed on several occasions that she was not aware of the money she had generated throughout her career or the balance in her bank accounts. At that time, as he explained, it was Toño Sanchís who managed all his financial affairs. The situation led her to investigate what happened, and numerous irregularities soon emerged.
Among the conclusions he presented, he highlighted that Sanchís had unilaterally increased his commission from 20% to 30% without reflecting it in a written contract, according to his version. Additionally, she collected invoices and documentation that she said showed she had not received full payments for many of her jobs. For example, he claimed not to have received part of the galas for Más que baile – a program he won – nor the copyright of his biography Ambiciones y reflexiones, which sold nearly 60,000 copies. According to Esteban, he signed a contract assigning the copyright to Sanchís, fully trusting him and without having read the terms.
The situation culminated in a lawsuit in which Belén Esteban demanded that Toño Sanchís return the money that, according to her version, belonged to her. After several years of confrontations both in court and on the sets, Justice ruled in favor of Esteban, condemning the former representative to pay her close to 600,000 euros, a figure based on the evidence that she was able to present.
While the conflict with Belén Esteban marked the decline of her career as a representative, the success of 900 days without Anabel seems to have given her an opportunity to re-emerge professionally, this time from audiovisual production.
