Why doña Letizia chooses to debut in the Picasso Year: kimono cut look in white canvas

Wide trapeze sleeves, round neck and belt to match the dress. Doña Letizia has chosen to premiere in this emblematic act that marks the start of a mega program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso.

The midi-length dress has an oriental-inspired kimono cut. It has hidden buttons and discreet lace details; and the color, white canvas, like the canvases of the universal painter from Malaga. It has been his artistic wink, minimal and simple. However, I just can’t find the connection of the tribute with the kimono air of the look. Baffling.

The event, this Monday, September 12 at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, is the first act on the official agenda for Queen Letizia this week in which she turns 50. The wife of Felipe VI has combined white with red animal print accessories, a trend that has remained forever in the looks of an autumn that is about to begin.

The events, which start this fall, will continue throughout 2023, the year in which the anniversary is commemorated. Picasso, considered one of the fathers of cubism and surrealism, died in the French town of Mougins on April 8, 1973. This date will mark the celebration of his artistic work and his immense legacy, both in Spain and in our neighboring France. In the words of the Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, who opened the event, “if there is an artist who defines the 20th century, who represents it in its cruelty, violence, passion and excesses, it is Pablo Picasso”.
