When Tyrese Spicer joined Toronto FC, he said, “I am going to surprise MLS.”
Toronto FC shocked the league on Tuesday by picking Tyrese Spicer with the first pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft arranged by adidas.
This is a moment that the forward for Lipscomb University has dreamed of for years. He comes from a close-knit family in Trinidad and Tobago.
“I just thank God to feed the chance to be number one,” the student who had already signed said in a Zoom interview. It makes Trinidad and Tobago stand out.
People from Trinidad, this small island, would never think of me as someone who is always doing their best to add to everything and work hard to be here right now.
“It means all the world to me, honestly, to be able to share this moment via [my family],” Spicer stated. “Being drafted number one by the SuperDraft is something that I have no intention of being in,” Spicer stated.
“To be honest, this would never have happened without God. My family believes in God and religion a lot. I was happy with the moment. “I’m ready for the next part of my journey.”
The time for Spicer to take on his task is special because it is the first game for Toronto under their new head coach, John Herdman.
He talked to the former Canada boss before the draft and already has the confidence that can help a young player do well.
“He told me, ‘We saw you playing a lot of minutes this season.'” He thinks I have a lot of promise to be great.
“He thinks I can really make that to the next level,” Spicer said, his excitement almost too much to handle.
The 6-foot-1 shooter has every reason to be sure of himself. Spicer scored a lot of goals in college. In four years at Lipscomb, he scored 29 goals and set up 18 others.
He was named First Team All-American or Sun Conference (ASUN) Player for the Year in 2023.
He could play anywhere on the front line. Spicer said, “I know what I can do.” “I am sure I am good enough. It’s certain that I will surprise MLS.”
“Being direct and explosive is how I act.” People always say I’m very unexpected if you watch me. “That’s good, as I always want my opponents to be on their toes,” Spicer said.
“Goals are fun for me.” I have a lot of hopes for myself. Fans of Toronto, I’ll make you happy when I get on the field. I’m sure I’ll make the stadium exciting, and I also have some big goals in mind.
Spicer is ready for a big change as he moves from a level I school with less attention to playing professional soccer in the top level. The 23-year-old refuses to slow down from the things he thinks are possible for him, though.
Giorgio Chiellini, a former Los Angeles FC defender, says Luis Suarez’s play for Gremio shows that he would have no trouble adjusting to Major League Soccer once he joined Inter Miami.
Suarez is allegedly in talks with Miami about a move that would bring him back together with Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, as well as Sergio Busquets, all of whom he played with at Barcelona.
The Uruguayan player is almost certainly signing a one-year deal with the MLS team. He spent 2023 with Gremio, who finished third behind Palmeiras within their first season back in Brazil’s top flight after being in the second tier the previous year.
During the season, Suarez scored 17 goals for Gremio and set up 11 others. This gave him the most goal involvements in the Brasileirao, with 28.
The striker, who will be 37 in January, scored 27 goals in all categories before leaving as a free agent. Chiellini, a defender who just retired, says the striker would do well in the MLS.
“Look at what Suarez did in Brazil this year…” Suarez famously bit Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup. Chiellini told Stats Perform that Brazil’s league is not seen as weak.
“Some European leagues are more similar to leagues in other countries.” I believe the Premier League is the only league that is really different from all the others.
“But to be honest, we can compare the other ones, or nowadays you can also find good players in leagues which were previously thought weird and not worth considering.” Now it is extremely different.”
” It’s still really good that Suarez got almost 30 goals. The way football is played now is different everywhere.
